A recent resurgence in popularity for Beach Music has captivated a new generation of fans and musicians. The phenomenon has prompted scholars to study its historical roots and cultural implications, but there is no single explanation for the genre’s re-embrace.
In his essay “Autumn of the Black Sheep,” University of Maryland historian Jonathan Hook argues that Beach Music’s re-emergence is rooted in the enduring popularity of “black soul.” As such, the genre’s revival has re-opened debates about the appropriation of African American musical and dance forms by white popular culture, as well as questions about the cultural tourism and gate-keeping that characterize contemporary hip-hop and R&B.
When searching for a DJ, look for profiles that include photos and videos of them performing. You should also read reviews from past clients to help determine their experience and professionalism. Additionally, many Jacksonville Beach DJs will provide lighting to enhance your event’s aesthetic and professional announcing to ensure that everyone knows what’s happening on the dance floor.
