Insulation?s Role in Energy Star Homes

Insulation?s Role in Energy Star Homes

Home insulation plays an essential role in achieving a high ENERGY STAR rating, reducing energy bills for homeowners and helping to create a greener environment. The key is to choose the right type of insulation, as well as properly installing and maintaining it.

Proper spray foam insulation slows the transfer of heat, keeping a house warm in winter and cool in summer. The amount of heat transferred through a material is measured with a thermal resistance, or R-value. R-values are listed on rolls of insulation at your local hardware store – the higher the number, the better the R-value. Insulation is made from a variety of materials, including fiberglass batts, cellulose (finely shredded newspaper), and modern spray foam. All insulation works by slowing the movement of heat into and out of a building, and sealing air leaks.

Renewable Materials Used in Insulation: What’s Available Today

The R-value of different types of insulation is determined by the type of material and how it resists conductive and convective heat transfer. In general, the less conductive and more porous a material is, the better it is at resisting heat flow.

Insulation must be installed correctly to work effectively and prevent moisture build-up, which can decrease R-value and cause problems such as mold and fungus. If you think you may have insulation issues, contact a certified professional to recommend the best option and ensure proper installation. Some insulation can degrade over time, so regular maintenance and inspections are also important to maintain optimum levels of performance.
