Whether identical or TWINS Education, twins spend their lives together and share a bond that most non-twins can never understand. From play dates, doctor’s appointments, naptime, daycare and even a shared bedroom, twins have the opportunity to learn and grow in tandem. However, when it comes to formal schooling, parents are often faced with a big decision: do they keep their twins in the same classroom or separate them? While there are arguments for both sides, research suggests that neither one is right or wrong.
In fact, many twin studies show no significant differences on average between classroom placement and academic performance (Polderman et al., 2010; White et al., 2018) or cognitive abilities (Hay and Visscher, 2007; Grasby et al., 2019). Likewise, in terms of social behavior, classroom separation is not associated with prosocial behaviors, physical aggression or anxiety, and there are no significant interaction effects between zygosity and classroom pairing on these outcomes (Lorenz & Van der Linden, 2006; Hay and Visscher, 2007).

Despite this evidence, some teachers still encourage twin pairs to be separated. They may believe that separating twins at such a young age helps each to develop their own individual identity, but this is not necessarily the case. As Mary Lamia points out in Psychology Today, breaking up a healthy twin bond may not have the desired results that educators, administrators and even parents might think. It can actually be traumatic for twins at such a critical age of their life, and it can also be detrimental to their future success in education and in life.
